In short: A real family journey through Kashmir covering Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Pahalgam & Srinagar with insider tips, honest hotel reviews, gondola advice, local experiences, and practical travel insights.
Kashmir with Family: A Journey Through Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Pahalgam & Srinagar
There are destinations you admire, and then there are destinations that quietly stay with you forever. Kashmir was exactly that for us.
When we planned this journey, we were travelling with:
- senior citizen parents
- a teenager
- a toddler
and honestly, we were unsure how manageable the destination would feel for such a diverse age group. But over the next few days, Kashmir unfolded itself beautifully—through snow-capped mountains, warm cups of kahwa, scenic horse rides, local hospitality, and experiences that no itinerary on paper can truly prepare you for.
If you are planning Kashmir with family, here’s exactly how our journey unfolded—and everything we learned along the way.
Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar & Drive to Gulmarg
We landed in Srinagar and headed straight towards Gulmarg.
And honestly, this is something we highly recommend.
Why Staying in Gulmarg Makes Sense
Many travellers attempt Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar. But if your goal is to experience the Gondola properly without exhaustion, staying overnight in Gulmarg saves:
- travel time
- early morning stress
- long queues
- unnecessary fatigue
Especially when travelling with kids or senior citizens, this decision makes a massive difference.
Our First Taste of Kashmir: Kahwa & Maggi
Somewhere along the drive, we stopped at a small local café for our first cup of kahwa and maggi—and little did we know this would become a recurring ritual throughout the trip.
Kashmir has a way of slowing you down. The cold air, the mountain backdrop, and the warmth of the tea somehow make even simple pit stops memorable.
Is Drung Waterfall Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
One of our first major stops was Drung Waterfall, and it turned out to be one of the most scenic surprises of the journey.
How to Reach Drung Waterfall?
Your regular vehicle can only go up to a certain point. From there, visitors usually need:
- an ATV
- local snow transport
- or seasonal ride options
to reach the exact waterfall area.
While the waterfall itself is stunning, the viewpoint en route is equally breathtaking. So even if you decide not to go all the way till the waterfall, we would still strongly recommend taking the stop for the scenery alone.
Staying at Kolahoi Green Heights, Gulmarg
For our stay in Gulmarg, we checked into Kolahoi Green Heights, and it felt like the perfect mountain retreat.
The property has:
- a charming vintage feel
- cozy centrally heated rooms
- stunning valley views
- close proximity to the Gondola
which makes it ideal for tourists, skiers, and families.
The restaurant served both Indian and local Kashmiri cuisine, and after a long day outdoors, returning to warm rooms overlooking snow-covered mountains felt magical.
Horse Riding in Gulmarg: Is It Worth It?
One of the most enjoyable experiences in Gulmarg was horse riding through the valley.
Our route covered several scenic points including:
- Helipad Point
- Maharani Temple area
- St. Mary’s Church surroundings
- Strawberry Valley stretches
- Golf Course viewpoints
- Children’s Park sections
- Snow viewpoints depending on the weather
- Forest trail pockets around Gulmarg
What truly elevated the experience, however, were the local guides. Most of them are not just horse handlers—they’re storytellers, photographers, entertainers, and local historians all rolled into one.
Feedback from Day 1
Stay in Gulmarg if you plan to do the Gondola.
It saves tremendous time and makes the experience far more relaxed and enjoyable.
Day 2: Gulmarg Gondola — Is It Really Too Crowded?
The Gulmarg Gondola is officially:
- the second-highest operating cable car in the world
- and the highest in Asia
Naturally, social media is flooded with reels showing endless crowds and chaotic queues.
But after experiencing it firsthand, we realised one thing:
The Gondola Experience Depends Entirely on Timing
We started early in the morning—and that changed everything.
The real rush begins later when:
- day-trippers from Srinagar arrive
- tourists wake up late
- lunch-hour crowds build up
Starting early helped us avoid most of the chaos people often complain about online.
Should You Book Both Gondola Phases?
We booked both—and we’re glad we did.
Travelling with:
- two kids
- two senior citizens
we initially wondered whether it would become exhausting. Surprisingly, the experience was extremely manageable.
While there was a small queue at Phase 1, we decided not to stop there initially since there wasn’t much snow. Instead, we proceeded directly to Phase 2—which turned out to be a brilliant decision because queues became much longer later in the day.
Within approximately 1.5 hours, we had reached Phase 2.
And honestly? Completely worth it.
What Can You Do at Gondola Phase 2?
This is where the real snow experience begins.
Activities included:
- sledging
- skiing
- snow play for children
- building snow castles
- tea and maggi breaks amidst snow-covered landscapes
Watching children experience snow with pure excitement is honestly one of the best parts of travelling to Kashmir with family.
Important Tip for Gondola Joy Rides
While returning, we stopped at Phase 1 for the joy rides.
Pro Tip:
Avoid:
- Fridays
- lunch hours
- last-minute bookings
and pre-book where possible.
This small planning detail can save significant waiting time.
Journey to Sonmarg
After lunch near the Gondola entrance, we began our drive towards Sonmarg.
And this is where Kashmir started feeling almost unreal.
Staying at Snowland Sonmarg
We checked into Hotel Snowland, and despite travelling across numerous countries and destinations, this property genuinely left us speechless.
Every single part of the property offered spectacular scenery:
- the room balcony
- dining area
- lawns
- open spaces
everything overlooked dramatic landscapes.
We stayed in the Premium Deluxe Room with River View Balcony, and both sunrise and sunset here felt cinematic.
Honest Hotel Feedback
While the views were extraordinary, the dining experience felt relatively average.
Since our parents follow a strict Jain diet, the lack of clear separation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food sections was slightly disappointing. However, the staff was courteous and prepared fresh Jain meals separately on request, which helped us manage comfortably.
One thing we strongly believe at Travel and Live is sharing realistic insights—not just perfect highlights—because that’s what genuinely helps travellers plan better.
Feedback from Day 2
Don’t completely believe social media reels about Gulmarg Gondola.
With proper timing and planning, the experience is smooth, enjoyable, and absolutely worth it.
Day 3: Thajiwas Glacier — The Meadow of Gold
From Sonmarg, we headed towards the iconic Thajiwas Glacier.
And there are honestly very few words capable of describing the beauty of this place.
The valley unfolds into a surreal contrast of:
- green meadows
- flowing streams
- massive snow patches
- mountain landscapes
with every turn looking like a postcard.
Trek or Horse Ride to Thajiwas Glacier?
Some enthusiastic members of our group decided to trek towards the base point, while we opted for horse rides—and that turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip.
The horses were:
- incredibly well-trained
- calm
- swift on difficult terrain
and the ride itself became an experience.
Our guides entertained us throughout with:
- stories about the valley
- Bollywood trivia
- local folklore
- filming anecdotes from old movies shot in Kashmir
And yes—most Kashmiri horse guides are exceptional photographers.
Some of our best family photographs from the trip were shot by them.
Life at the Glacier Base
At the base point, time simply slowed down.
While my horse Raja happily grazed nearby and drank water from a stream, I sat down with:
- kahwa
- maggi
- chai
- roasted corn
surrounded by snow patches and open meadows.
Some of us splashed icy water near the streams, others simply sat quietly absorbing the landscape.
Moments like these are impossible to plan—and impossible to forget.
Exploring Around Sonmarg
Later that evening, after a quick lunch, we explored the surrounding areas of Sonmarg.
We visited:
- the starting region associated with the Amarnath Yatra route
- riverside fishing points
- small family activity zones
Children enjoyed the little games around the area while we sat by the riverside with ice creams and chai, watching the valley slowly transition into evening.
Feedback from Day 3
Negotiate wisely—but choose your horse guide carefully.
At the end of the day, it’s these local guides who transform a ride into a memorable experience through their stories, warmth, and understanding of the valley.
Day 4: Journey to Pahalgam & A Slice of Real Kashmiri Hospitality
Our drive towards Pahalgam turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
Beyond scenic roads and shopping stops, we were fortunate enough to experience something far more meaningful—a visit to a local Kashmiri home.
We were hosted by a Srinagar family en route, where we experienced:
- traditional noon chai
- freshly baked girda bread
- warm conversations
- local stories and culture
And honestly, experiences like these are what make a thoughtfully curated journey feel different from a standard holiday.
Shopping Stops Along the Way
The route also gave us opportunities to shop for:
- Kashmiri spices
- kahwa blends
- walnut wood items
- Kashmiri willow bats
- local handicrafts
These slower road journeys are what make Kashmir feel immersive rather than rushed.
Staying at Welcomhotel Pine N Peak, Pahalgam
Our home for the next few days was Welcomhotel by ITC Hotels Pine N Peak—and it was exceptional.
The property beautifully balances:
- luxury
- hospitality
- scenic beauty
- recreation
making it one of the finest family stays in Kashmir.
Since we were also celebrating a birthday, the hotel thoughtfully arranged:
- room décor
- a birthday cake
- a special campfire setup with music
for our little one.
The property also offers indoor recreational activities including:
- pool table
- table tennis
- chess
- carrom
Honestly, it felt like a place where you could happily spend two full days without stepping outside.
Morning views of snow mountains, lazy afternoons, bonfire evenings, and campfire music created an atmosphere we didn’t want to leave.
Feedback from Day 4
Pine N Peak is a fantastic premium stay option in Pahalgam.
The staff genuinely pays attention to personal requests, making celebrations and family stays feel extra special.
Day 5: Aru Valley vs Betaab Valley — Which One Should You Choose?
Today we explored two of Pahalgam’s most famous valleys:
- Aru Valley
- Betaab Valley
As per local regulations, we had to hire local vehicles for this part of the journey, but thankfully our driver was excellent.
Aru Valley: Quiet, Scenic & Soulful
Personally, Aru Valley completely stole my heart.
Unlike more commercial attractions, Aru feels:
- quieter
- slower
- more untouched
The landscapes are incredibly beautiful without feeling overcrowded.
It’s the kind of place where you simply sit, stare, and let the mountains do the talking.
Betaab Valley: Activity-Filled & Family Friendly
While Betaab Valley is undoubtedly stunning, it is much more commercial compared to Aru.
That said, it offers:
- horse riding
- ziplining
- hiking trails
- activity zones for children
and importantly for families travelling with senior citizens—it has wheelchair services available.
Since our parents wanted to enjoy the valley without walking too much, hiring wheelchairs worked beautifully while the kids enjoyed horse rides and we explored on foot.
Evening in Pahalgam
In the evening, we headed towards the riverside area of Pahalgam to watch the sunset.
From there, we explored the local markets for:
- Kashmiri shawls
- traditional dresses
- local souvenirs
The atmosphere was lively, relaxed, and the perfect way to end the day.
Feedback from Day 5
Aru Valley stole my heart.
If you enjoy quieter landscapes and less commercial experiences, Aru is unmissable.
Day 6: Back to Srinagar — Gardens, Crafts & Local Markets
Today we proceeded back towards Srinagar.
The drive itself was scenic and relaxed, with multiple stops along the way for:
- carpet shopping
- walnut wood furniture
- local handicrafts
In fact, one of our favourite purchases from Kashmir was a beautifully crafted walnut wood centre table.
Exploring Srinagar’s Mughal Gardens
By evening, we explored Srinagar’s famous Mughal Gardens region, which includes several historic gardens spread around the city.
The symmetry, landscaping, fountains, and mountain backdrop create a very different side of Kashmir compared to the valleys.
Afterwards, we:
- explored local markets nearby
- visited a temple
- and stopped near Char Chinar
Day 7: Doodhpathri — Kashmir’s Hidden Gem
Our final excursion was towards Doodhpathri.
And the drive itself was breathtaking.
The route winds through:
- pine forests
- rolling meadows
- riverside landscapes
making it one of the most scenic drives of the trip.
At Doodhpathri, visitors can choose:
- ATV rides
- horse riding
- riverside walks
Surprisingly, our senior citizen parents absolutely loved the ATV rides, while we chose horse riding so we could experience the valley at a slower pace.
And honestly, Doodhpathri feels far less commercial compared to many mainstream tourist spots.
Day 8: Departure — Leaving a Piece of Our Heart Behind
As we headed back for our departure, the feeling was bittersweet.
Some destinations impress you.
But Kashmir quietly becomes a part of you.
And somewhere between the mountains, kahwa breaks, horse rides, snow patches, local conversations, and warm smiles—we left behind a small piece of our heart.
