Ladakh Travel Guide & Essential Information

Ladakhi cuisine is heavily influenced by Tibetan traditions. Designed to provide warmth and high energy in the cold, harsh climate, the food here is mild, hearty, and incredibly comforting.

Must-Try Local Ladakhi Food

  • Thukpa: The staple food of Ladakh. A delicious, piping-hot noodle soup packed with vegetables or meat, perfect for cold evenings.
  • Momos: You cannot visit Ladakh without eating Momos! These steamed or fried dumplings (stuffed with minced meat or veggies) are served everywhere from street stalls to high-end cafes.
  • Skyu: A traditional Ladakhi stew made with kneaded dough (wheat or barley) cooked slowly with root vegetables and meat. Very filling and unique!
  • Butter Tea (Gur Gur Chai): A distinctive salty pink tea made with yak butter and salt. It helps moisturize your lips in the dry cold and keeps the body warm.
  • Chhurpi (Yak Cheese): Hard, dried cheese made from the milk of a dzomo (a cross between a yak and a cow). Locals chew on it for hours to keep warm.
