Arab sailors first discovered the island of Mauritius in the 9th Century and named it “Dina Arobi” or “Dinarobin”; later in 1505 Portuguese sailor discovered the island and named it “Cerne” however both the communities did not settle in this island. The Dutch were the first to colonize this island in 1598 and named if “Mauritius” after the Prince of Holland Mauritz de Nassau. Later the French and British settled in this island. Mauritius became independent of slavery on 12 March 1968. Today with stable democracy and the beauty of island attracts lots of visitors.
