Himachal Travel Guide & Essential Information

The food in Himachal Pradesh, known as Pahari cuisine, is deeply rooted in local culture, keeping locals warm in the harsh winters. It is a delightful mix of spicy, slow-cooked curries and rich Tibetan influences.

Must-Try Local Pahari Food

  • Kangra Dham: A traditional, festive vegetarian feast served on leaf plates. It includes rice, Madra (chickpeas in yogurt gravy), dal, and sweet rice.
  • Siddu: A local steamed bread stuffed with a savory filling of walnuts, almonds, or poppy seeds, heavily dipped in desi ghee. Mostly famous in Kullu and Manali.
  • Babru: A Himachali variation of the popular kachori, stuffed with black gram paste.
  • Trout Fish: If you visit Kullu or the Tirthan Valley, the fresh river Trout fish (pan-fried or grilled) is an absolute delicacy.

Tibetan & Cafe Culture

Due to the strong Tibetan presence in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, you must try authentic Tibetan Momos, Thukpa (noodle soup), and Tingmo. Additionally, the cafe culture in Old Manali and Shimla offers excellent bakeries, coffee, and continental breakfasts with mountain views.
