Uttarakhand Travel Guide & Essential Information

Traditional Uttarakhandi food (Pahari cuisine) is deeply nutritious, simple, and primarily vegetarian. Prepared over wood fires using local lentils and grains, the food here will keep you incredibly warm in the cold mountain air.

Must-Try Local Pahari Food

  • Aloo ke Gutke: A quintessential Kumaoni snack! Boiled potatoes fried in pungent mustard oil and seasoned with dry red chilies and local coriander. Usually served with hot tea.
  • Kafuli (or Kapaa): A deeply nourishing, thick green curry made from spinach and fenugreek leaves, cooked slowly in an iron kadhai and served with rice.
  • Phaanu: A complex, delicious, and protein-rich stew made from a mix of different lentils (like Gahat or Kulath) soaked overnight.
  • Bal Mithai: A hugely popular brown chocolate-like fudge, roasted with khoya and coated with white sugar balls. You must pick up a box from Almora or Nainital to take back to Mumbai!

Vegetarian Food Availability

Because Uttarakhand is "Dev Bhoomi" (the Land of Gods), it is one of the easiest places in India to find exceptional Pure Veg and Sattvic food. Cities like Haridwar and Rishikesh are strictly vegetarian by law. Across Mussoorie, Nainital, and Dehradun, you will find excellent North Indian thalis, pure veg dhabas, and Gujarati-friendly options.
