Uttarakhand Travel Guide & Essential Information

Uttarakhand is a fantastic year-round destination, as many of the region's popular attractions are located in the cool, elevated areas of the Terai. It rarely gets uncomfortably hot, making it a favorite summer escape.

Best Time to Visit

  • Summer & Spring (March to June): This is the peak season! The weather is beautifully pleasant and clear, making it the perfect time for families to visit Nainital, Mussoorie, and Dehradun to escape the intense heat of the plains.
  • Autumn & Winter (September to February): Post-monsoon, the landscape is incredibly lush and green. Winters can get very cold (with snowfall in Mussoorie and Auli), which attracts couples and snow-lovers. This is also the best time for Tiger safaris in Corbett.
  • Monsoon Warning (July to August): Monsoons are very harsh in Uttarakhand. The hilly terrain becomes prone to sudden landslides, and national parks are closed. It is generally advisable to avoid traveling to the high hills during this time.

How to Get There

  • By Air: From Mumbai, you can fly directly into Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (DED), which serves as the primary gateway to the Garhwal region (Mussoorie, Rishikesh). For the Kumaon region (Nainital, Corbett), you can fly into Pantnagar Airport.
  • By Train: The state is well connected to major Indian cities. The primary railway junctions are Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Kathgodam (the gateway to Nainital).
  • By Road: Uttarakhand is connected via a scenic road network from New Delhi. However, remember these are winding hilly terrains. If you rent a car, ensure you have an experienced hill driver.
