West Bengal Travel Guide & Essential Information

With geography ranging from high-altitude Himalayas to coastal plains, the weather in West Bengal varies greatly depending on where you travel.

Best Time to Visit

  • Winter (October to March): This is the absolute best time to visit West Bengal. The oppressive humidity vanishes, leaving cool, pleasant weather. October marks the arrival of Durga Puja, transforming Kolkata into a massive, glittering art gallery. This period is also when the Sundarbans open for tiger safaris.
  • Summer (April to June): The plains and coastal areas become excessively hot and sweaty. However, this is the peak tourist season to escape to the cool, crisp air of the northern hill stations like Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

How to Get There

  • By Air: Traveling from Mumbai is incredibly easy. For the southern and central regions, fly into the major international hub, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) in Kolkata. For the northern hill stations (Darjeeling/Sikkim), fly into Bagdogra Airport (IXB) near Siliguri.
  • By Train: Kolkata is one of the most well-connected railway hubs in India, served primarily by Howrah and Sealdah stations. For Darjeeling, you take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and transfer to the iconic toy train.
  • By Road: You can take a scenic road trip into Kolkata via national highways, but keep in mind that coastal and rural road connections can occasionally be affected during the monsoon season.
