Kolkata
The cultural capital of India, Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is a city that is vibrant,
exciting, highly intellectual, and deeply nostalgic. Owing its grand architectural layout
to the British Empire (who ruled from here until 1911), it features stunning historical
landmarks like the Victoria Memorial, St. John’s Church, and the engineering marvel that
is the Howrah Bridge. If visiting Kolkata, do not miss the grand
Durga Puja held every October—just be prepared for massive, joyful crowds!
Darjeeling
Widely regarded as the "Queen of the Hills," Darjeeling was originally known as 'Dorje Ling'
(meaning "Place of the Thunderbolt"). This picture-perfect hill station sits at a height of 2,134
meters, offering spectacular views of Mount Kanchenjunga. Visitors come to explore serene Buddhist
monasteries, ride the historic Toy Train, and sip the universally acknowledged finest
Darjeeling tea straight from the sprawling, emerald-green estates.
Sundarbans
Formed by the merging of the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers, the Sundarbans is regarded
as the world’s largest river delta and continuous mangrove forest. A UNESCO World Heritage site,
the deep, winding waterways of the Sundarban Tiger Reserve house a massive population of the elusive,
swimming Royal Bengal Tigers, alongside saltwater crocodiles and rich avian life.
It is explored exclusively via multi-day boat safaris.
Kalimpong
Take a break from the chaotic city lifestyle at the quaint, peaceful little hill station of Kalimpong.
Known for its pleasant climate, you will find beautiful Buddhist monasteries (like the 17th-century
Thongsa Gompa), colonial-era churches, and sprawling flower nurseries famous for cultivating exotic
orchids. It is the perfect place to trek through pine forests and truly unwind.
Shantiniketan
Located in the Birbhum district, Shantiniketan is a tranquil, culturally rich university town
founded by the legendary Nobel Laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore. Visva-Bharati
University, located here, revolutionized education by holding classes outdoors in harmony with nature.
It is globally famous for its vibrant Poush Mela (winter fair) and the uniquely colorful Basanta Utsav
celebrating the arrival of spring (Holi).
Digha & Bakkhali
Digha is West Bengal's most popular coastal resort town, famous for its long, flat, hard-sand beaches
where the waves are incredibly calm and shallow. A favorite weekend getaway for locals, it offers
beautiful sunrises, casuarina plantations, and excellent fresh seafood. Nearby Bakkhali offers a
quieter, more secluded beach experience on a deltaic island.
